John Nance Garner was born on November 22, 1868, in post-Civil War Texas. He grew up in a log cabin at Blossom Prairie in Red River County in Northeast Texas. Oscar Cromwell Dancy (1879-1971), born and raised in Wilkes County, North Carolina, on December 22, 1879, received his law degree from Southern Normal University in Huntington, Tennessee.
